Dog owner snarling after attack - (Ottawa Sun - September 5,2010)

CALGARY - The owner of a dog that he said was attacked by three pit bull-type canines insists their unknown master should pay his $1,500 vet bill.

 

Rob Weatherall said he was walking his one-year-old female King Charles cavalier spaniel at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in an off-leash area near the Bow River weir when three larger dogs violently swarmed his pet. (More)

 

Autistic boy to be reunited with his lost dog - (Toronto Sun - July 30, 2010)

NIAGARA FALLS, Ont. – Enjoying a roll in the grass and a belly scratch at the Niagara Falls Humane Society, the little dog was blissfully unaware of how she had captured the hearts of local residents.

 

Harli, a six-month-old Australian kelpie/border collie mix from Ohio, went missing in Niagara Falls 13 days ago, leaving the autistic boy who owned him devastated, and prompting people from all over the community to join in the search. (More)

Cop kills dog while giving family death notification - (Calgary Sun - June 22,2010)

A Saskatoon police officer sent to a home to give a next-of-kin death notification Saturday is under review after he shot and killed a dog on the property.

 

A resident left a door open while the officer spoke to family members and several dogs went into the yard, Saskatoon police said in a release. (More)

 

Dog survives 2 weeks in wilderness - (Toronto Sun - June 10,2010)

WINNIPEG - An East Selkirk family is ecstatic, yet in disbelief, at the way its small dog survived eastern Manitoba's wilderness for nearly two weeks before arriving home.

 

"Everyone couldn't believe it," Dana Hoffman said Wednesday of her family's reaction to being reunited with Tina, an 18-month-old female border collie, after the pet's ordeal at Nopiming Provincial Park. (More)

 Woman bitten while shielding chihuahua from larger dog - (Calgary Sun - May 21,2010)

Leaping a fence to viciously attack a chihuahua and a woman who defended it has landed a destruction order for a dog that was already on the radar of Calgary bylaw cops.

 

Bylaw officials said Joker, a two-year-old Rottweiler/bull mastiff, leapt the ramshackle fence of a home on Templeside Circle N.E. Friday afternoon and charged at a pair of women walking a chihuahua, capturing the smaller dog in his jaws and shaking it. (More)

 

Mail carriers brace for dog biting season - (Toronto Sun - May 20,2010)

OTTAWA - Mark Roper had already red-flagged the house.

 

The Canada Post letter carrier knew from years on his regular east-end route that the pit bull who guarded the property was aggressive. It barked from the window or from the back yard almost daily as Roper approached.

 

But on an otherwise typical mid-March day, the dog somehow broke free of its confines, pounced and sank his teeth into Roper’s arm. (More)

TORONTO — Sorrow turned to frustration for volunteers at an Ontario animal shelter Wednesday as an escalating protest to end the euthanization of hundreds of cats and dogs continued to fall on deaf ears.

Man gets year in jail for torturing girlfriend's dogs; one to death - (CP24.COM - April 27,2010)

NEWMARKET, Ont. — A man who repeatedly tortured his girlfriend's dogs until one succumbed to broken ribs, a fractured skull and two detached retinas has been sentenced to a year in jail.

 

Christopher Michael Munroe of Toronto has also been banned from owning a dog for 25 years, must complete 150 hours of community service and pay $13,000 in vet bills to the owner. (More)

 

Aggressive dog 'Bandit' put down after multi-year dispute - (CP24.COM - April 14,2010)

An aggressive dog under the control of the Toronto Humane Society was put down Wednesday after a long dispute over how to deal with the animal.

 

Bandit -- a pit bull cross -- was the subject of a disagreement between the humane society's board, its new executive director and the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

A central Alberta man says he saw an older man dragging a puppy behind a motorized bike late Sunday afternoon on a rural road near Blackfalds, north of Red Deer.

WINNIPEG - A rural animal control officer says she's shocked at the treatment of a neglected elderly dog who was dumped on a highway north of Winnipeg Tuesday and struck by another car.

 

Bonnie Riddell said the highway incident is just the latest chapter in what appears to be the very sad story of the 15-year-old female German shepherd-terrier mix. (More)

Pickering Coyote Kills Dog - (Citytv.com - March 2,2010)

It’s been just over a month since four coyotes were spotted near the Rouge River ravine in Pickering.

Now, one of them has snatched and killed a small dog.

A woman was walking two Pomeranians around 10pm on March 1. She says that a coyote approached from behind and grabbed the smaller dog (pictured above) of the two dogs, then ran off into the woods.

Discovery Of Spiked Beef Tongue Worries Dog Owners - (Citytv.ca - February 24,2010)

Midtown dog owners are worried someone is targeting their beloved pets with spiked beef tongue.  

Lola, a Lab-Shepard mix, found a beef tongue pierced with landscaping nails near the off-leash area in Cedarvale Ravine Sunday morning. She started chewing on it before her horrified owner pulled it out of her mouth, fearful it was yet another attempt to harm or poison dogs

Dog owners still pitted against animal control - (Toronto Sun - February 10,2010)

For Brittany and Rambo - a couple of dogs labelled as pit bulls — life is, well, the pits.

 

So say the owners of the dogs, which remain in the custody of Brampton Animal Services, having been seized Jan. 13 on the assumption they’re pit bulls.

A Cape Breton man was walking home from work Wednesday evening when he came across the dead body of a guard dog, chained up, curled into a ball, and frozen in a wooded area.

Family dog saves man in fire - (AOL News - January 9,2010)

A family dog is being credited with saving a man's life during a house fire on Route 5 in the Head of Cardigan, P.E.I., early Saturday.

 

The man had been home alone asleep about 12:30 a.m. when he was awakened by the dog barking and saw the flames, Const. Paul Richard of the Montague RCMP stated in a news release. (More)

 

Dog back with deceased owner's family - (CBC News - January 6,2010)

Fred the dog has been reunited with the Montreal family of his deceased owner following a five-day journey across Canada.

 

The dog, which was found with deceased owner Cyril Roy in a Nanaimo, B.C., trailer three days after he had succumbed to heart failure, arrived by train at Montreal's Central Station Tuesday night. (More)

 

B.C. family's dog saves boys from cougar attack - (CTV - January 4,2010)

A cougar attacked a B.C. family's golden retriever Saturday night after the dog stepped in between the cougar and an 11-year-old boy.

 

Police, who later shot the cougar dead, credited the 18-month-old dog -- Angel -- for saving the boy's life.
